Accomodation

ACCOMMODATION AT MAFIKENG

A variety of accommodation is available to competitors and will hopefully suit all price ranges.  It should be pointed out that there is a large Conference taking place in Mafikeng over the period of the Nationals so those wishing to stay at venues other than the International School should book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.  Those wishing to stay at the School should complete the Accommodation Form and send/email it to me.  We have an agreement to use the School up to and including the year 2001 when we will be holding the World Gliding Championships in Mafikeng, so we hope that many of you will support the Nationals organisation and stay at the School which has offered us these extremely affordable prices.

The International School of S. Africa:
[prices as at December 1998]
The rate will be R50.00 bed & breakfast per person.  Prices for dinner have not been finalised but I doubt that it would be no more than R30.00. (last year it was R22.50).  Bedding is provided, but you may wish to provide your own sheets & pillows.  You do need to bring your own towels.  So essentially we are being offered - dinner, bed and breakfast for probably less than R80.00 per person per day.  If anyone has any special dietary requirements, e.g. vegetarian, diabetic, etc. the caterers would be happy to accommodate you providing you complete the accommodation entry form accordingly.

As last year we need to know in advance when you would be arriving so that the facilities can be arranged.  Obviously if only one or two people arrive prior to Christmas – the School are not going to employ a full compliment of kitchen staff!!

Facilities are as follows:-  Hostels sleep 50 people (25 per floor – ground and first floor) - there are a few single rooms, and the others are all with 2 beds with a partition between the beds.  Each partitioned room has a cupboard and desk and a powerpoint.  Bathrooms are on each floor and would be designated to either Male or Female use!  Laundry would be done for an additional fee.  Fridge space would be available - goods should be clearly marked, and at your own risk.  There is also access to an ice machine.  You may be advised to bring a fan for the room, as nothing is air-conditioned!  There are several public telephones for use with either coins and/or cards.

The school has wonderful facilities and gardens with 9 tennis courts, 5 squash courts, a large swimming pool, a gymnasium, as well as a rugby and a soccer field.  The premises are secure with security guards on the main gate.  None of the hostel bedrooms are lockable, so valuables should not be left in the room – there is a main safe which would be available if you wanted to make use of it.
