BULLETIN 6

21st December 2008

Just days to go before you head towards Welkom airfield for this year’s Nationals.  Do enjoy your Christmas and please take note of some final points.

You are asked to bring a copy of the glider’s inspection report, i.e.  not just the authority to fly but the actual report so that we can confirm the glider’s empty mass from the report.  This is to facilitate and simplify the weighing process.

We will be strict on all-up mass because of the very real differences in performance that comes with the lower wing-loading that will be a feature of these Nationals.  Please note that this requirement includes the Club Class, as random checks will be carried out on them as well.

A huge vote of thanks to Klaas Goudriaan who has completed the showering facilities for those who are planning to camp at the airfield.

BULLETIN 5

Just over two weeks until the start of this year’s Nationals.

A reminder to all pilots that the following documentation as per CAA Regulations are required to be carried on board when you fly (photocopies are probably a safer bet, but have the originals somewhere safely):-

The Certificate of Registration

The Certificate of Airworthiness, however in our case the ATF (Authority to Fly) as approved in our MOP by the Commissioner.

The appropriate licence for the pilot in command

The Aircraft Radio station licence

The Certificate of Release to service - not required according to our MOP

The aircraft Flight Manual  - not required - see 1 above

the Mass and Balance report - not required in accordance with our MOP

the flight folio - not required in terms of our MOP

The MEL (minimum equipment list) – not a necessity for gliders

Noise certificate - hardly necessary in our case - even for a motor-glider

The list of visual signals for use by intercepting and intercepted aircraft  - probably not applicable to gliders

A reminder that you should have paid your SSSA fees for 2009 and have an FAI competitor’s licence for 2009.  With the exception of MGC members, the treasurer of your Club will have received the SSSA invoices for 2009.

If you plan to camp at the airfield, there will be a security guard on the airfield during the night hours.  Also thanks to Klaas Goudriaan who is busy building as I write - you will be able to take showers.

Remember to bring and/or arrange to have all the trophies at Welkom in time for the prize giving.  Please remember to ensure they have been engraved and are polished.

Thanks are extended to Nashua (Free State & Northern Cape division) for supporting the event with the loan of a photocopier for the period of the Nationals, and to Andries Lombaard for arranging this.

It is recommended that pilots contact their cell-phone provider to enquire about the “Locate Me” facility – a lot cheaper than the cost of a Search & Rescue facility.  Vodacom’s search facility is called "look4me" on the website www.vodacom4me.co.za

BULLETIN 4

5 December 2008

1.    Pilots planning to compete at the Nationals are asked to urgently advise the organization of their intention to compete.  Planning logistics such as number of tug a/c, amount of fuel to order, etc. is very difficult and obviously varies depending if there are 20 gliders or 40 gliders.  Please send an email to cd-welkom08@netactive.co.za and bobcar@global.co.za indicating your intention to fly.

2.    Many thanks are extended to Klaas Goudriaan who has generously agreed to build some showers at the Welkom airfield with the approval of the Municipality.

3.    Pilots are reminded to bring their own hose pipes and necessary connections for water ballasting.

4.    Catering will be available at the airfield – breakfast, snacks during the day and dinner most evenings.

5.    The handicap list should be available on the website within the coming week.

6.    Those who won trophies at last year’s Nationals are reminded to ensure that they have been duly engraved and that the trophies are returned to Welkom in pristine condition (i.e. polished) and in time for the prize-giving.

7.    Pilots are reminded that they need to pay their SSSA fees for 2009 as well as the FAI competitor’s licence.

8.    It is recommended that pilots contact their cell-phone provider to enquire about the “Locate Me” facility – a lot cheaper than the cost of a Search & Rescue facility.  Vodacom’s search facility is called "look4me" on the website www.vodacom4me.co.za

9.    Pilots that have entered but were not sure of the glider and class they were flying – please advise the emails listed in point 1, once this has been finalized.

Search & Rescue facilitation

Some of you will be aware of the protracted effort spent last year trying to find a lost pilot.

Vodacom offer a facility to subscribers called “look4me” at a very low cost which I have found very successful in locating the carrier of a vodacom cell phone that is a party to the arrangement by simply sending a “find”message to the  subscribers cellphone .

Location has proven to be within a few hundred metres at times.

If you subscribe you can nominate the party entitled to locate you and pass on that information  to the contest director.
