Not sure
that Merlin was too happy having to don that shirt, but that's great - thanks
so much for the pic. and
support. Sure the guys will appreciate it!
We've had an hour's briefing this morning - introducing all the
organisers, all the team managers and pilots, and then going through
procedures and the few points from the meeting last evening.
Lufthansa are the main ' sponsor partners' for this event and there are
Lufthansa banners all over the place, and a whole host of Lufthansa personnel
have arrived who will be acting as estcorts to the
teams at the opening ceremony.
The sky is still overcast and it remains a lot cooler so that is a
blessing. Nothing worse than being boiling hot in a town square with
the sun beating down.
So thanks to all the support from one and all - those who have sent emails,
those that have just been following the practice week via the website/s (official
and SSSA) - we're about ready for ' kick off', so let the serious fun begin.
To you all, thanks, Carol
Saturday 2nd August
Yesterday’s
forecast included rain in the afternoon.
Yes,they were right
– there was rain, but it only started later in the evening. We were at an Italian restaurant in the
nearby town of Belzig
when the heavens opened and there was a fair amount of rain as well as
lightning and considerable winds.
Pieter is camping on the airfield and sms’d
to say he was ‘ holding onto his tent’ !
Also during
the night there was more rain. This
morning is overcast and considerably cooler, which is really pleasant as
yesterday afternoon was really hot, muggy and humid. Often the day of the Opening Ceremony is
the best flying day, but so far it is not looking that way. The clouds are there, but there are a few
gaps – so really don’t know if it is likely to break and become sunnier later
or whether it is likely to shower.
We have an
Official Briefing at 11 a.m. so perhaps they will give us an update on the
weather then.
The Team Managers’ meeting
last evening was a good 1 ½ hrs’ worth.
It included some discussion points about the Local Procedures, some ‘ church’
notices, general information, as well
as details about today’s arrangements for the Opening Ceremony.
The good news
is that there are more tugs coming – they have been used at other contests
and were not available sooner.
The Opening
Ceremony is to take place at 4 p.m. in the Market Square in Belzig
and they have arranged for buses to transport us all to/from the airport from
2.30 p.m. as parking in the town will be difficult and they are sealing off
the area so that no cars will be able to park there. We have already booked our table at the nearby Italian
restaurant , so we plan to take one car to Belzig
later this morning and park it near the restaurant. Then after the Ceremony we will enjoy the
town and walk to the restaurant and then as/when we are ready we will ferry
drivers back to their cars at the airfield rather than being dependent on the
bus’s timetable.
So that’s the
plans for today. We are having a team
meeting at 10.30 prior to the official briefing to bring the pilots ‘ up to speed’ on the team managers’ session last evening. So will dispatch this off to you and wish
you all a great weekend.
