1. HEALTH ASPECTS:


If visiting Johannesburg and Mafikeng areas only, no medication is required, but should you plan to visit Game Reserves or other areas which could be malaria areas the British Airways Travel Clinic in Johannesburg recommend Mefliam or Doxycycline. The Kruger Park Game Reserve has a "Malaria Helpline" should you wish to contact them direct for advice +27 (0)82.234.1800.

• Glider’s Certificate of Airworthiness or Permit to Fly, that does not exclude competitions
• Proof of 3^rd Party Insurance to the amount of SA Rand 2,500,000. This will be available to purchase at the airfield at a cost of R500.00 for the 3 week period.
• Personal medical insurance is required for all team members, covering accidents & sickness, including any local hospital costs, as well as the costs of transport back to the team member’s home country
• Glider Pilot’s Licence or equivalent documents.

• Parachute (serviceable – e.g. repacked within the last six months)

7. FREIGHT:

• If you go south, follow the N.12 signposted towards Bloemfontein. Once at the SW corner of Johannesburg, instead of following the N.12 take the N.1 to the north towards Pretoria/Roodepoort.
• If you go north, take the N.3 towards Pretoria. At a major intersection, keep straight on the circular road, now the N.1 towards the west and south Roodeport & Bloemfontein. (Do not go to the north to Pretoria on the N.1.)

• At Mafikeng you can keep straight on the main road, Nelson Mandela Drive, until the stop street by the Mmabatho Tusk Hotel. Turn left at the Hotel onto Dr. Albert Luthuli Drive. Stay on that road – it later becomes Setlogelo Drive, across the railway line, past the University, across various stop streets. Until you come to a major X roads when you will turn right onto Bray Road which is towards Makgobistad. The airfield is approx. 10 km. from the last houses. Do not take the first road right which is to the Military Barracks.
• Alternatively at the beginning of town and the start of houses, turn left onto Link Road. Follow it until you come to the Vryburg Road, where you should turn left. A short distance, then turn right onto Bray Road which will take you straight out on the road to the Airport.

9. MISCELLANEOUS:

• Aero tows will cost US$30 or equivalent in Rand. Aerotow retrieves will be available if gliders have landed on other suitable airfields.
• This year’s contest is intended to be very relaxed and casual. We would like each pilot (please liaise with each other if more than one pilot per country) to please bring your country’s flag, with measurements approx. 1.8 m. x 1.2 m. We do not require you to bring tapes of national anthems.
• Local air carrier, SA AirLink, has daily flights to Mafikeng from Johannesburg International Airport.

• There is a small swimming pool at the airfield which will be available for "cooling off". It is advisable to bring clothing for both hot and cooler conditions. Swimming costume, cool "hot weather" clothes, as well as something for when it is cooler and/or wet. It can be quite chilly in the evenings and/or after a thunderstorm.
• There have been enquiries about one’s safety. We would like to assure visitors that although we obviously cannot guarantee your safety 100%, we have found the people in and around Mafikeng to be friendly and welcoming. When going to e.g. the shops, it is imperative to lock up your vehicle and to put anything of value in the boot/trunk out of sight. Do not leave valuables lying around and handbags left unattended or open. When driving in built-up urban areas it is recommended to keep car doors locked and the windows closed or almost closed.
• The main roads to and from Mafikeng are quite safe. We would however suggest driving with caution as animals (e.g. cows, goats, etc.) are sometimes allowed to wander freely in the more rural areas. We would advise you about this at Briefing.
• The speed limit on the main roads is 120 k.p.h. and in built-up areas 60 k.p.h. Be watchful when driving to Mafikeng for radar traps to catch you speeding, especially on the outskirts of the small towns.
• Petrol is currently selling at R3.72 per litre for super grade, R3.72 per lt. unleaded petrol, and diesel R3.675 per lt. Prices are reviewed every month and could change on the 1^st Wednesday of each month.

• As this event is being held over the Christmas period, may we ask everyone attending to bring a small gift typical of your country as a Christmas present for someone else. The men should bring a gift suitable for a man, and the ladies should bring something suitable for a lady. It should be a maximum value of R100.00.
