The list of turn points is being finalised and will be sent out
in our next Flyer.
The South African port of Durban is the most cost effective point
of entry that minimizes both the shipping costs to South Africa and overland
transport to Mafikeng. There are regular sailings to Durban from most European
ports and the journey time is about 3 weeks. All consignments should be
routed through our Clearing Agent, Nomad Freight, Fax No. +27.31.301.1877
Attention: Das. Please send us copies of your correspondence so that we
can coordinate the progress of incoming shipments. The one-way overland
freight from Durban to Mafikeng is about $1000.
We are still negotiating with hauliers to get the best rates. Waivers have been arranged for all importation charges including wharfage so you can declare the full value of the gliders for insurance purposes.
As soon as the contents of the container have been finalized please send us a letter on your NAC letterhead stating that the gliders will be competing in Gyps Africanus and will be shipped out within 90 days. You should also give the registration, serial number and value of each glider. At this point we would also like to know the Shipping Line you intend to use, the name of the vessel and it’s ETA in Durban.
Brian Spreckley, who has been doing this for the previous 6 years has offered to help you with this at the European end. He will also assist you to consolidate containers so that you get the best value for money.
We will give you any other updates in the next edition of the Flyer.
Visa requirements – passport holders of Poland and Kenya would require
visas. Passport holders of other countries would require visas if they
plan to stay in South Africa for longer than 90 or 30 days, depending which
countries you come from. However it would be best to
check with your local South African diplomatic or consular representative to confirm that these requirements have not changed. A letter of invitation (attachment # 5) is enclosed should it be required.
It will be possible to train at Mafikeng prior to the contest, but
this must be requested to Brian Spreckely – see paragraph 2.
A list of possibilities is attached, as per attachment
