Airfield operation and local procedures during contests

1.    General information:

  • Airfield:                      Welkom Municipal Airfield
  • ICAO Designate:        FAWM
  • Runways:                    07/27 - paved 2005m tar

15/33 - 1000m gravel

  • Co – ordinates:            27° 59' 53S 26° 40' 11E
  • Height MSL:               4402 ft
  • Runway frequency:     118.0 MHz

2.    Airfield procedures:

2.1.        General

  • Remember that the runway is always active.
  • When towing out to the runway, wait for permission from the launch marshal before entering and backtracking.
  • Backtrack as fast as possible, clearing the runway as soon as possible.
  • Gliders must be parked to the west of the runway (control tower side) before gridding, with the nose of the glider clear of the side of the paved surface.
  • Gliders will be lined up on the runway only when instructed to do so by launch marshal, with the wingtip remaining west (control tower side) of the centre line. Open class gliders will be lined up only after the tug has passed.
  • Gliders must be gridded as close together as possible.
  • Pilots that are not ready and present when gridding and/or launching commences, will be pushed to the side or back of the grid.  They will be offered a launch once the whole grid is launched.
  • Vehicles must be parked well to the west of the runway, against the long grass.
  • No vehicles will be permitted to be parked forward of the glider to be launched. Penalties will be applied.
  • Spectators to remain behind the launching glider.
  • Release height is 6000’ msl – or 500 magl. Gliders towing higher than this will be charged extra tow fees at R45/min, at the discretion of the chief tug pilot.
  • Crews of gliders at the back of the grid are expected to help in the front of the grid. Crews of the first gliders launched are expected to assist till all gliders are launched.
  • The first glider in the thermal will establish the direction of turning. This will apply before and after the start.

2.2.         Launching procedures

RWY 07 Departure  

    • Takeoff on RWY 07
    • Tow planes climb straight out (heading 070°) until approx 600 ft AGL. Then left unto heading 340° until approx 1000’ AGL.  Turn Left heading 250°.  After release the tow pilot must position himself to land on RWY 07 – Short landing
    • After touchdown the tug should reduce speed as soon as possible and taxi past gridded gliders on the eastern edge of the runway.  RWY 07 may not be entered in front of lined up tow combinations.

RWY 07 Relights

  • Gliders should join a right hand downwind for runway RWY 07 or right base for RWY 33 gravel.
  • Gliders landing on RWY07 must land and stop behind gridded gliders.  
  • Gliders landing on the gravel runway 33 should clear and return to the launch point on the edge of the gravel runway.
  • The under-shoot to the runway may only be crossed if 2-way communication is established with the marshal and no inconvenience is caused to other traffic.  Radio call on 118.0 before crossing. NO BLIND TRANSMISSION – get permission from the launch marshal first.

 

RWY 25 Departure 

    • Takeoff on RWY 25
    • Tow planes climb straight out (heading 250°) until approx 600 ft AGL. Then right onto heading 340° until approx 1000’ AGL.  Turn right heading 070°.  After release the tow pilot must position himself to land on RWY 25 – Short landing
    • After touchdown the tug should reduce speed as soon as possible and taxi past gridded gliders on the eastern edge of the runway.  RWY 25 may not be entered in front of lined up tow combinations.

RWY 25 Relights

    • Gliders should join a left hand downwind for runway RWY 25 or left base for RWY 33 gravel.
    • Gliders landing on RWY 25 must land and stop behind gridded gliders. 
    • Gliders landing on the gravel runway 33 should clear and return to the launch point on the taxiway and grass to the west of the tar runway.
    • The under-shoot to the runway may only be crossed if 2-way communication is established with the marshal and no inconvenience is caused to other traffic.  Radio call on 118.0 before crossing. NO BLIND TRANSMISSION – get permission from the launch marshal first.

 

2.3.         Finishing procedures:

  • A finish ring might be called for by the director depending on weather or safety conditions.
  • All finishes will be over the remote finish line as set for each task. 
  • Make sure you have enough energy for a safe circuit.

 

  1. 3.      General:

3.1.         Flight recorder files (IGC files) shall be delivered to Scoring Commission within 30 mins of landing. After an outlanding files shall be delivered immediately after returning to the airfield. Backup device files shall be delivered a.s.a.p. if requested.

     3.2. Tugs

  • Unmanned radio procedures are followed by the tow pilots.
  • The tugs will be on the apron before launching.
  • Checks and engine run ups will be done at the holding position of the runway in use.

 

     3.3 Retrieve vehicles

  • Retrieve vehicles should avoid driving on any runway.
  • 2-way radio communication required – radio calls must be made before entering / crossing runway.
  • Gliders must evacuate runways as soon as possible after landing.
  • The area on the sides of the runway may be used in emergency only. Pilots should acquaint themselves with these areas before flying as there might be meerkat holes.
  • No vehicles may cross the main runway, unless a glider is towed, and a radio call was made and it is safe to do so.

3.4  Other vehicles

  • Only official operational vehicles (and vehicles towing gliders) may drive on runways or taxiways and only with 2-way communication with other traffic. It should be avoided to drive on any runway
  • Competitors / crew may park their cars and trailers in the designated areas only.
  • Non operational vehicles must use the service roads and may not drive on runways, taxiways or cross them.
  • Visitors may only enter the operational area when escorted by a competition official.

     3.4   Game fence

  • A 2 metre high game fence has been erected on the Western side of the field.
  • The fence runs to the south of runway 15/33 to the intersection then runs south on the west side of runway 07/25.
  • Pilots need to be aware of this hazard when finishing low from the West or doing low circuits onto runways 07, 33 and 15

      3.5 Fuel Point

Welkom now has fuel and we will need to keep this area clear for aircraft refueling. Therefore all       gliders and their towing vehicles must stay outside the yellow lines demarcating the fueling area.
