Oscar Goudriaan |
Reigning World Champion – Open Class, Oscar Goudriaan will be defending his Open Class title flying in an ASW.22BLE. Oscar has competed internationally in the Open, 15m. and Standard classes since his first entry into the international scene when he flew in an ASH.25 with Laurens in Austria in 1989. Oscar married to Charlene has two daughters and is a company director. For those of you who have ever driven to Klerksdorp past Stilfontein, the huge mountain of stone at Stilfontein on the left hand side of the road is Oscar’s future! Oscar flies at Potchefstroom and Hennenman. |
Laurens Goudriaan |
Oscar's elder brother, Laurens, will also be flying Open Class in an ASW.22BLE. As Oscar and Laurens will be the only two pilots competing from the same country in the Open Class they will have a distinct advantage over the rest of the Open Class field – as the Open Class is limited to one pilot per country. Laurens has competed in International Championships since 1981 with some excellent results – finishing 3rd on two occasions and 4th at the last World Championships. He is married to Suzy and they have three daughters. Laurens flies at Hennenman. |
Uys Jonker |
Uys will be flying in the 18m. class in a LAK.17. Uys competed at the Club Class World Championships in both Australia and Germany. He is an engineer and working at Potch university. He is married to Kobie and they have a daughter and a son. Uys flies at Potchefstroom and Orient. |
Mark Holliday |
Mark,
a doctor by profession, is married to Nici and they have three sons. Mark
will be flying an ASW.27 in the 15m. class. This will be his second World
Championships, having managed a creditable 11th position in
the 27th World Championships in Mafikeng, South Africa. Mark is a member
of the Magalies Gliding Club at Orient

Attie Jonker |
Attie will also be flying an ASW.27. Attie has previously competed at the Club Class World Championships in Australia and in Germany and finished 16th in the latter. He is a lecturer at Potchefstroom University, married to Lucy, and will become a father later in the year. He flies at Potchefstroom. |
Sven Olivier |
Sven Olivier will be flying an LS.8 In the Standard Class. This will be Sven’s second World Championships, as well as attending the pre-Worlds in Leszno last year. He has also flown in Spain. Sven flies at Worcester with the Cape Club. He is a lawyer by profession, married to Christelle and they have two daughters. |
Dawid (Dolf) Pretorius |
Dolf will be flying his LS.8. He competed in the pre-Worlds in Leszno, as well as flying at other European venues, as he is currently living in Switzerland. When in South Africa he flies at Hennenman. Dolf is an airline pilot with Nippon Cargo Airlines. Married to Lynnore, they have a daughter, who at 18 months will be the youngest crew member of the South African team! |
Carol Clifford |
Carol
is the South African team manager. She was born into a gliding family in
England – her father being an airline pilot by profession and a glider
pilot in his spare time and her mother was also a glider pilot. Her father,
Frank Foster was World Champion with Nick Goodhart, when they flew a 2-seater
Slingsby Eagle, back in 1956 at St. Yan, France. Carol herself a glider
pilot has been secretary of the gliding club at Baragwanath, Donaldson
Dam, and more recently Orient since 1973. Married to Bobby, they have two
grown-up daughters.
