1997 SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL GLIDING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Task Area

Competition Area

The area around Mafikeng can be characterised as flat, with some occasional ridges with shallow slopes not exceeding 200m above ground level. The elevation of Mafikeng airport is 4187 ft

Topography and outlanding conditions

The flying area stretches from north-east of Mafikeng to the west thereof, with ground elevations ranging from 4000 ft to 5400 ft. The economic activity of the area is predominantly agriculturally based, with maize production to the south-east and south of Mafikeng and cattle farming to the south-west and west thereof. During December maize fields are freshly ploughed and prepared for the planting of maize. This provides excellent outlanding facilities. However, even in the predominantly cattle farming areas, the occasional maize field can be found which does not pose a problem for outlanding in general.
